Great BBQ Event

Thirty two people attended and were treated to a Greek themed event revolving round a spit roasted feast of chicken and lamb.

The food was prepared by the  BBQ partnership of Tom & John ( aka known as Pinky and Perky or even Laurel & Hardy – guess which one was which) and they said that they were very pleased with the way things went, albeit it was a trifle windy early on.

Many thanks to Scalby Fair for the free loan of the marquee. Five members of 41 Club are from Scalby Fair. However the biggest thanks must obviously go to John and Jenny Edwards for their kindness in hosting the event and lending their garden to 41 Club for the evening.

Archery Meeting

The next sports event will be a joint meeting with FARTS at Scarborough Archers, Osgodby Lane Scarborough on Thursday 27th July.

Start 6.30  followed by the opportunity to have a meal at the Poachers Barn for those who want to eat, unfortunately they no longer do the BOGOF offer, now it’s just a free drink with the meal.

Anyone interested please let Darren Kellet know no later than Friday 21st July indicating whether you want to eat. Also let me know if you are left handed as apparently you need a special bow.

July BBQ Final Arrangements

Hi fellow BBQ enthusiasts

The weather is reasonable ( ie no rain ) for Saturday and we are now over 30 attendees, which is great.

For those of you who haven’t been to the beautiful house and gardens of the Edwards family known as Fishermans Cottage, East Ayton, it is best to approach on foot from A170 up the road to Forge Valley and is the first house on the left. There will be some blue and white balloons flying at the entrance.

Anybody sensibly thinking of coming by taxi should use the East Ayton garage as the stop off and pickup point.

Because this is an ‘opt in ‘ event payment of £15 per head is payable on the night in cash to Simon Ward who tells me that he has been trained in the dark arts of extracting money from Yorkshire folk. Rather him than me !

Look forward to seeing you all on the night.

Tom

July BBQ Change of Plan

I am pleased to confirm that we have a good sized albeit motley crew lined up for a Greek styled BBQ feast on 15th July at Fishermans Cottage!
However, there is some BAD NEWS ?
Despite sterling efforts over the last six weeks by our host JQE the trip round Ayton Castle is OFF! JQE has at the last minute been told that there are apparently insurmountable insurance issues surrounding so many people, potentially, making the visit! John’s confirmation that only about three members of 41 Club have even got the wind to do the trip has cut no ice apparently!

GOOD NEWS
There is always good news. If we don’t go round the Castle then NOBODY WILL GET LOST or fall over a protruding medieval shin bone and stub a toe, fatally! Also, we won’t lose half our number to The Forge Valley pub – think about it ! Sending out search parties to find out where the hell everyone is ?? So it’s all for the good, really.

John and Jenny and Jessica and I look forward to seeing you all for a cracking good do at 5pm onwards on Saturday

Quoits Meeting

A big thank you to everybody who competed at the Quoits Championship 2017.  It was a fantastic evening with a good turnout . The weather was beautiful and good to finish off with a few beers.

It was a very close contest this year with the winners being Mike Whiteley and Dave Ascough by the skin of their teeth.  Well done to both of you.

Thanks to John and his team from the Quoits club for their support and to Glenys at the Beck Hole Pub for catering for us.
Overall a great evening so thanks again to everybody.
Darren

July BBQ and Historic Walk Update

Itinerary – Meet at Fisherman’s Cottage at 16.00 pm if you wish to have a guided tour of Ayton Castle. Only recently have guided tours become available for the general public. I am told by John Edwards that, strictly speaking, it is a fortified Manor House which was built in the turbulent 14th Century. The trip may take up to an hour AND IS VOLUNTARY of course.

17.00hrs – Repair to Fisherman’s Cottage where we will start the evening with a complimentary glass of bubbly and then enjoy a traditional Greek starter consisting of cold meze and finishing with hot meze such as grilled lamb meatballs.

18.00hrs – We help ourselves to spit-roasted marinated lamb and chicken served with Greek Village Salad and buttered Jersey potatoes.

19.00hrs – Dessert course consisting of Greek-style yoghurt served with sweet white grapes and honey (there will also be some Tiramisu for anyone who doesn’t like yoghurt).

DRINKS – There will be a self-service bar with drinks at supermarket prices, typically £5-6 bottle for wine and £1 for beer and lager. Or please feel free to bring your own liquor if you wish – we have plenty of glasses!

WEATHER – If inclement then the event will be held in a marquee and will not be cancelled unless very strong winds occur which is unlikely.

COST – To include the bubbly and a per capita contribution to the Friends of  Ayton Castle – £15 per head to be paid on the night.

RSVP – This is an event for members, partners and guests.  If you wish to attend then please Tom know by email no later than 12.00hrs on Monday 10 July.

(REMINDER – this is an OPT IN event so you have to book if you wish to attend)
Lots of people have already booked  but, unfortunately Tom’s iPad has dumped the details so please book again – sorry !

If anyone has any queries then please contact Tom ASAP on his mobile 07939 246202

May 2017 Meeting – Oliver’s on the Mount

The May meeting was held at the refurbished Oliver’s on the Mount restaurant and beforehand an outside pre dinner drinks reception was held by our new Chairman, Mark Laws and his lovely wife, Maria, at their house on Deepdale. The original plan was for members and their partners to walk to the restaurant from this venue but this did not prove to be a popular plan as everyone instead went by car.

We were honoured to have the attendance of Richard and Daphne Frank whom had returned from their six month long holiday in Spain especially for the meeting.

Michael Whiteley had problems with his car alarm after parking his car at the restaurant as it went off three times but only then realised that he had locked the car without letting Simon Lockley get out!! Not quite sure why the child door locks had been set but I suppose when you are with Simon you need to cover all eventualities.

41 Club had the restaurant to ourselves and enjoyed the wonderful views over Scarborough, together with a three course meal followed by coffee/ teas and After Eights.

Great fun and fellowship was had by all and grateful thanks were given to our hosts.
