Walking Rugby – CANCELLED

Sports Officer Darren has arranged for any 41 Club member who would like to have a go at walking rugby to join the FARTS Meeting on Monday 4 February. Members wishing to attend should let Malcolm Smith know via email at mbs@norwav.com

Our next meeting is our first attempt at walking rugby, the rules of which are:

  • No running with or without the ball
  • Ball must be passed backwards
  • Ball must touch knee to start, restart game,
  • No overhead passing
  • Tackle is two handed touch, repeat touch’ to upper body.

Tom Gillon who runs the games at the rugby club is organising the night and will be on hand to explain everything and ref the game. To make the evening viable we need at least 10 players.

Tom has booked the First Scarborough Scout Group HQ on Maple Drive near Northstead Primary School. We meet at 6pm and have the facility until 7.30pm. After the game we adjourn to the rugby club for food and drinks.

Please let me know ASAP if you want to play and definitely no later than Friday 25th January.

I am assured by Tom it is a good laugh and not too strenuous and suggests those playing bring shorts, tee-shirt and trainers.

January Meeting – Burns Night

BURNS NIGHT   Thursday 24th January 2019

Now that Christmas is out of the way there’s some time for our livers to recover before being doused yet again on Burns Night. For 2019 this will be a joint function with RT88 as it was last year. Traditional Scottish music will be heard all night (but not that dirge “O, Shower of Scotland” which wrongly identifies Edward II rather than Edward I who was known as “the Hammer of the Scots”)
The Venue
The venue is the superbly refurbished Trainee Restaurant at Scarborough TEC on Filey road called NINETEEN 09. Ideally we should get ourselves there between 6.30 and 6.45pm with a view to hitting the bar no later than 7.00.
The Evening
At 7.30, that kilted Scot Ian Duncan will bagpipe himself into our midst and then proceed to ADDRESS THE HAGGIS in his own inimitable style. A tot of whisky will be to hand.
The Menu
** FIRST COURSE **
MacSween Traditional Haggis with Bashed Neeps and Tatties
OR
Scotch Broth
** MAIN COURSE **
MacSween Traditional Haggis with Bashed Neeps and Tatties, Parma Ham wrapped Asparagus Spears and Whisky Sauce
OR
Scottish Beef and Stout Casserole, Bacon & Herb Dumplings, Pomme Purée and Sautéed Cabbage
** DESSERT **
Cranachan Cheesecake with Raspberry Coulis, Toasted Oats & Whiskey Cream
** CHEESE COURSE  **
A Selection of Scottish Cheeses, Biscuits, Grapes, Celery and Chutney
** TO FINISH  **
Tea or Coffee served with a piece of Tablet (tr Scottish)
**  THE TOAST  **
Armed with a glass of Scotch Whisky there will be a Toast to THE BARD
Whisky Tasting
After the meal there will be a Whisky Tasting Session presented by very knowledgeable IAN COCKER, who will treat us to a taste of three different styles of nectar.
Cunning
The more observant of our confraternity will no doubt spot that the menu choices should cope with:
A. Members who love haggis
B. Diners who only want a bit of it, and
C. Folk who hate the stuff!
Dress
By all means don a kilt if you wish, (does your sister have one you could borrow?) otherwise collar and tie please, as a mark of respect for The Bard
ATTENDANCE
IT  IS VERY IMPORTANT that we know attendance numbers by 12 noon WEDNESDAY 16th January AND your food choice for Starters & Mains.  Please give details to Tom Cathcart by text to 07939 246202 or email to topcat14@icloud.com

November Meeting Report Armistice 1918 – The Road to Peace

The November meeting this year comprised of a get together at the Rugby Club, some members unfortunately apologised and still turned up for the meeting which rather confused the catering numbers, please ensure that if you do find you can attend that you let the catering officer know.

After a fine meal of steak pie chips and peas for most of us, scampi for the overflow numbers ! We settled down for an evening of fascinating facts and touching human stories.Mike Rought-Brookes read some letters from the front during the Great War which were touching and then David Henderson gave us an overview of the last two years of the Great War including battles and strategies.  David also gave us an insight into the real level of casualties both human and animal and in the impact of those left at home.  He linked this with his own family connections.

Trafalgar Night

29 of us attended an evening designed to commemorate the battle of Trafalgar which was held in October 1805. The venue was the Sea Cadets Hall in Sandgate, which was worth a visit in its own right, and had been decked out by the cadets with flags. No less than 5 guests were welcomed and I am pleased to say we inducted a new member into our ranks.

There was then a brief business section with reports from the committee plus an appeal for the return of any outstanding GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) to the Secretary to forward on to 41 Club National. Any queries re the members statements for 2016 and 2017/18 to last year’s treasurer Steve please. Simon also reminded people that they needed to opt in if they wished to attend the Charity Night – Friday 30thNovember at the Rugby Club.

This was followed by an excellent meal of soup followed by fish-pie, all prepared by our own ‘in-house’ chefs Tom and John who had put a lot of effort into the evening.

Tom then gave us an overview of the battle of Trafalgar emphasising what an extraordinary and decisive victory it had been, with 27 British ships led by Lord Nelson defeating a combined fleet of 33 French and Spanish ships and sinking a good number of them. Sadly Nelson did not live to enjoy his victory, having been shot by a French musketeer.

John built on this by describing the battle from the viewpoint of Admiral Robert Moorsom, who was of particular local interest having been born in Whitby.  We even listened in awe to the sound of continuous canon-fire until someone burst the bubble by asking what it had been recorded on in 1805… there’s always one!

Chair Simon ended the evening by calling for a well deserved round of applause for the organisers, followed by a toast to Lord Nelson with 54% proof rum, and then finally RTBI

Charity Night raises over £2000

Scarborough 41 Club’s annual charity evening was held on Friday 30th November at Scarborough Rugby Club in support of Scarborough Samaritans, chairman Simon’s chosen charity for this year.
Around a hundred guests enjoyed a four course meal, which was preceded by a short talk from the local Samaritans and which shed a revealing light on their background and the very important work they undertake.
During the meal guests were entertained by Robert Schmuck, the talented local singer and pianist. Following the meal, Robert and two of his band members played a set of Billy Joel hits – which resulted in the night ending with a dance floor packed with people (if not dancing talent).
Thanks to the generosity of those attending the evening, local business sponsors, raffle and auction prize donors and individual donations, we were delighted to raise a grand total of £2018 to help support the work of Scarborough Samaritans.
