November Meeting – Armistice Talk

We meet at the Scarborough Rugby Club 7.30 for 8.00 for what should be a memorable evening.

THE ARMISTICE

ARMISTICE DAY is commemorated every year on 11th November to mark the cessation of hostilities between the Allies of The Great War and Germany. It took effect at eleven  o’clock in the morning – ‘the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month ‘ of 1918. The Armistice brought to an end a nightmare piece of warfare between the countries of Europe and beyond.
Our meeting will involve a presentation and talk by our very own David Henderson who is an expert on WW1. If his presentation is anything like the talk he gave a year ago on The Third Battle of Ypres then we are in for an excellent thought provoking evening.
Do please wear a red poppy in your buttonhole at the meeting.

THE MEAL

You will be pleased to know that we will be having ‘top of the range’ Rugby Club beefsteak pie with chips and peas at 8 followed (possibly ?) by cheese and biscuits.

APOLOGIES

PLEASE  apologise if you can’t attend the meeting. You can apologise via the Club website at https://www.scarborough41club.co.uk/apologies/ or via the link on November’s newsletter. Six members didn’t do so for the event last year but paid for the meal anyway, just as five members failed to give apologies for Trafalgar Night. Silly, really gentlemen.

Summer BBQ

Unfortunately the summer BBQ had to be cancelled. 41 Club chose one of the few nights of this glorious summer when torrential rain was forecast. This was a disappointment as Tom had planned an evening of West Indian food and entertainment.

Simon Says

A miracle drug is one that has now the same price as last year.

How many pharmacists does it take to change a light bulb?
Just one, but he has to do it ten days, three times a day.

Simon looks out the front of the chemist and sees a woman holding a bottle jumping up and down in the parking lot. The pharmacist walks out to the parking lot and asks the woman whats the matter. She replies ” I saw it said ‘Shake Well’ after I took it”.

National Sporting Events

Following the superb triumph of the another British cyclist and fellow Welshman Geraint Thomas in the Tour de France I thought it would be timely to remind everyone that the inaugural 41 Club National cycling event takes place next month over the weekend of 10th-12th August.
Hosted by Northampton Nene 41 club this event is an opportunity for budding cyclists to pit themselves against fellow 41ers in the hope of receiving the “coveted yellow jersey” or if you are like me it offers the chance to have a leisurely cycle ride through the countryside of Northamptonshire plus the socialising that follows each evening.
If anyone is interested it is not too late to book and you should contact Ken Banfield onken.banfield@virginmedia.com or 07740 104242.  The price of the event is £37 per person which includes Friday evening food and a BBQ on Saturday.
Continuing with the sporting theme and for those of you who enjoyed attending previous Round Table National Sporting weekends, have you considered attending 41 Club’s own NSSW. If you have a competitive streak then this is an event not to be missed but if you only fancy having a weekend of fun and fellowship with fellow 41ers then you should also consider going because the additional “S” depicts the key word “Socialising”.
This year’s event is being held at the Potters resort near Great Yarmouth on Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd February 2019.. Prices for the weekend package incl. all sports, food and entertainment is £230 per person sharing. Further details can be obtained from Kelly Clarke at region17@41club.org

October Meeting – Trafalgar Night Celebration

As every schoolboy knows, the Battle of Trafalgar was fought on 21st October 1805. The Royal Navy’s 27 battleships under the command of Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson defeated the numerically superior forces of the combined French and Spanish fleets. This ushered in 100 years of naval peace throughout the seven seas.

THE EVENING

We meet from 7.pm onwards in the Golden Ball pub on Sandside which serves the best (and cheapest) beer in Scarborough, namely Sam Smiths hand pulled ale. At 7.30.pm we make our way 40 yards up the hill the Sea Cadets Hall where we will eat, drink and make merry. Supper is cream of tomato soup followed by fish pie and peas. Red wine will be served from the bar and is Included in the cost of the evening
TRAFALGAR TALK

After the meal we will have an introductory talk about the significance of Trafalgar followed by what can only be described as a superb reading of the account of a local boy who actually fought in the battle. John White has found a wonderful piece of research on a man called ROBERT MOORSOM who was born in Whitby. He was captain of the battleship REVENGE, which was armed with 74 guns. He was badly injured during the battle but survived and was later promoted to the rank of Admiral. This reading should not be missed by anyone with any interest in the history of the British Isles.

TOAST

At the conclusion of the reading the Chairman will propose a (rum) toast to LORD NELSON in accordance with the 213 year old tradition of the Royal Navy
