Charity Night raises £3000

In breaking news the updated figures show that £3,000 was raised for charity. A brilliant outcome.

After a break of a few years in deference to COVID, we resumed our run of 41 Club Charity Nights with a fund-raising event held at the Rugby Club on Saturday 21st October.

Chaired by Simon Lockley, the evening was organised over several months by a hard-working committee of:

Simon relaxes, his work done.
  • Charlie Hindle – Dept Chair
  • Stephen Slade – Raffle
  • Stuart Baines – Sponsorship
  • Iain Johnston – Finance
  • David Henderson – IT and Promotion of the event
  • Mike Shingler – MC

The event was well supported, with 84 people attending it. Guest of honour was Bernie Brown – the Manager of the Westway Open Arms Centre and Food Bank. Health and safety announcements were made and their message emphasised with the assistance of Lisa Kellett and the incomparable Dominic Grunwell, They were treated to a hot buffet meal. Our entertainer, the talented Mark Gregory, arrived and sprang into action with a fiendishly difficult (for some of us anyway!) quiz, and then an hour of singing. Marks wise choice of old favourites soon had people lured onto the dance floor to strut their stuff. drink was consumed and the atmosphere was joyful, to the delight of many and bemusement of some. Steve Slade conducted a raffle then MC Shingler was away auctioning prizes generously donated.

Our MC for the evening, Mike Shingler

Over £2000 was raised from a combination of entrance fees, a successful raffle and auction, plus generous sponsorship and donations, with the proceeds being divided between the Stroke Association and the Westway Open Arms Foodbank based at Eastfield.

Simon commented: ‘I would like to thank all those people who helped organise and promote the event, plus all those who attended, and the various individuals and companies who donated a substantial sum of money towards the above total.’

Signpost Helps Dutch Visitors Find Scarborough

The signpost inaugerated at the last 41 Club meeting is already proving successful. Visitors Benny Gussinklo and his wife Anjo. and Masja van Dongen, the daughter of one of the founders of Aalten Round Table, Ben Westerweld, viewed the totemic memorial to our twinning Aalten. They were visiting 41 Club member Richard Grunwell for the weekend.

September Meeting – Signpost

The September meeting saw 41 Club meetings resume after the summer break. Chairman Charlie was sunning himself in a somewhat warmer and definitely more exotic climate, and so we were in the capable hands of Dominic for this meeting.

Richard Frank made a rare but welcome appearance, and introduced us all to the new Aalten signpost outside the newly renamed Central Hotel. As you will recall, the previous signpost was outside the Crown Spa Hotel, where it pointed somewhat forlornly to Denmark. The blame for this navigational error, and for the poor condition of the sign, was attributed by Richard to Ian Costello, who then in turn spent the rest of the evening vigorously denying this.

Anyway, the ceremonial duties performed, we retired into the Central for a most excellent steak pie main course, followed by an equally impressive sticky toffee pudding.

During the brief business, the secretary announced that Brian Heaps has retired from 41 Club at 93 years of age, after approximately half a century of membership, which is a most impressive feat. We all wish Brian best wishes for a well-deserved rest.

Details were also supplied about the next meeting, which is the Charity night at the Rugby Club on October 21st

The meeting closed with a toast to both the memory of Richard Appleton, and to the usual RTBI.

November Meeting – Membership Drive

We are all aware of the necessity to recruit new members thereby ensuring the continuation and survival of our club and that, historically, we have looked to Round Table to provide us with new blood. From discussions I have had with Dave Robinson, current (and previous) chairman of Round Table 88 it appears that this source of potential new members is in deep trouble. Dave tells me that RT have only 5 active members. This is something that should concern us all.

Having had discussions with various members of 41 Club it became apparent that something should be done. Accordingly, our meeting to be held on November 23rd will take place at The Central Hotel and will be a recruitment event for RT and, by extension, ourselves. Peter Wilkinson and his team at Scarborough Ambassadors have kindly allowed use of their data base to enable RT to target suitable prospective members and Dave Robinson has written a letter of introduction inviting those interested to come to the meeting and learn a little more about the RT/41 movement. I have made contact with York RT who have agreed to send a delegation to our meeting and they will also speak of their own experiences of revitalising a dormant club and making it a vibrant, relevant organisation once again.

I hope that we will achieve a good attendance from all quarters. I duly invited Wynn Parry to this event and advised him of our strategy and he was impressed with our vision and cooperation across the various clubs. Unfortunately he is unable to attend but wishes us well. Fingers crossed that it all works!

It is hoped that we will be joined by members of RT 88 for this occasion. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MEETING WILL BE ON THURSDAY, 14TH SEPTEMBER. Apologies should be made by Friday 8 September.

Quoits Capers

On a glorious summer’s evening (irony? Editor) 10 members from 41 Club, Farts and Round Table with 1 guest attended the annual 41 Club quoits competition on Wednesday 7 June at Beck Hole organised by our Club’s Sports Officer Darren. A member of the Beck Hole Quoits Club, Ivor, agreed to play making 6 teams of 2 players.

The only audience was a small flock of sheep who soon left for pastures new after witnessing the dire level of the quoit throwing which was so bad the Quoits Club members had to quickly cover the wood surrounding the clay pits with matting to avoid too much damage from the “woodpeckers” and “crabs” (quoits terms for the uninitiated) which were numerous.

After a delayed start to enable the players to seek refreshment from the Birch Hall Inn 4 of the scheduled 5 rounds of matches were completed before the midges became too much.

With the last round of matches abandoned by mutual consent everyone retired to the Birch Hall Inn for further refreshment (beer and pies) where Darren announced David A partnered by the ringer (another quoits term) Ivor to be the winners and who were both presented with a bottle of wine and a suitably engraved and beribboned gold coloured medallion reminiscent as someone pointed out to the ones which used to be handed out by a late and sometime Scarborough resident on a Saturday evening’s children’s TV programme. This may explain why the medallions were so cheap for Darren to buy!

Out of respect to the feelings of the other players the final places of the losing teams were not made public.

A good night’s entertainment enjoyed by all the participants save for the sheep.

Despite the presence of a large notice and recent history several players (name names) availed themselves of the neighbouring woodland to relieve themselves prompting a warning from the Quoits Club members that if they received a complaint from any of the neighbouring properties there would be no invitation to play next year. We have been warned!
