Chairman Peter Peaks Too Soon?

Your esteemed chairman achieved yet another mega goal on the 5th October. In true explorer fashion, he completed the last two of the 214 Wainwrights ( hills over 304.8m -1000ft in old money- in the lake District). Ably accompanied by his sherpas, Stuart Baines, Ian Brabbs, Simon Ward and Mike Whiteley (unfortunately our other usual walkers, Richard Coulson and Gordon Hayes couldn’t make it), he choose one of the  wettest and windiest days seen in the Lakes all year to undertake the task. The 8 mile circuit included peat haggs, raging torrents and rutting stags. To celebrate, we had a tot of whisky at the top. Funnily enough, it is perhaps the only time we’ve been on a trek in the Lakes and not seen another walker at all!!

Well done that man, and as promised, I haven’t mentioned the following day’s ramble in brilliant sunshine around Low and High Force in Upper Teesdale!

As Peter and Ian try to navigate out of the car park, Mike indicates the verticality of the ascent.

Rest Dodd from the route up via Heyeswater Gill (described in wainwright as a gentil babbling brook)

Wainwright 213 Rest Dodd (696m)

Route to The Nab from Rest Dodd- note peat haggs  and rutting stags ahead

Wainwright 214 The Nab (576m)

Can it get any wetter? Yes it can!

All smiles on the way down, but we have to go up to go down. For Richard Coulson’s benefit- its technically all downhill from here

Charity Presentation

Past Chairman Dave presented a cheque for £500 to the Rainbow Centre. Dave is pictured with Rainbow Centre Manager Trish Kinsella and Trustee John Trebble. The cheque was the result of collections and fund raising during his year(s) as Chairman. It was a great effort by Dave and the club as for much of his time as Chairman there were no face-to-face meetings due to the covid pandemic. Charitable giving is a major part of the club’s ethos, and this year we will be doing our best to contribute to Chairman Peters nominated charity The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

October 2022 Meeting: Askims

The next meeting is on Thursday 20th October at Askim’s on Huntriss Row, 7.30 for 8pm. The Chairman has never heard of it, but it’s a well-reviewed Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant. In his never ceasing quest for good food, Dominic has checked it out, with a resultant glowing report. Your web editor has also visited and can report that the food is innovative and filling. Now the holiday period is over hopefully we will get a good turnout to this one. If you are not coming please apologise using the following link. https://www.scarborough41club.co.uk/apologies/

September 2022 Meeting Report; Crescent Hotel

After a bit of shenanigans with where the meeting actually was, our illustrious catering team of Dominic and John did a great emergency manoeuvre and managed to get us in at the Crescent. Despite it being prime holiday time for ‘silver surfers’, some 22 people attended, including 3 guests, John Price, Andrew Hayes and Bob Heaps.

The evening opened with Chairman Peter asking for a minute’s silence in respect of the Queen. He had received a missive from National setting out protocols for any meeting around this sad time, but decided that, as we were such a ‘well behaved club’, we would meet all the requirements without him having to read them all out!

The meal comprised Veg soup, Boeuf bourguignon and a very large cheese board, all of which your correspondent found to be very good.

There was no major business reported, other than the Secretary reporting that Gordon Hayes had resigned due to his heavy commitment related to his charity work. The Chair reported that he had heard unofficially that the Aalten weekend (with Aalten coming here) was conceivably likely to maybe possibly perchance be in late April 2023, but he wasn’t sure. Watch this space for further information.

The meeting finished with the usual toast to RT. Brian Pidd then had a gentle rebuke for the Chair forgetting to toast the new King.

It was good to meet up again after the summer recess.

September 2022 Meeting: Venue Change

Important venue change

Due to doctor’s orders, the owner of La Roca Tapas restaurant has had to close this week.

However, our illustrious Catering Office has informed me that he has secured a booking at the Crescent Hotel at 7.30 for 8.00pm this Thursday, 15 September.

For those wishing to meet up for a drink beforehand he has suggested the Scholar Bar from 6.30pm.

Mike Shingler
Secretary

September 2022 Meeting: Tapas

The next meeting is the Tapas evening on Thursday September 15th at the usual time at La Roca on Blands Cliff. Pre-meeting at the Merchant starting 6.30-7pm. Tapas meetings usually go down well and the reviews for La Roca are consistently very good, and so hopefully a good attendance for this meeting. Historically the attendance for the September meeting can be a bit unpredictable. Let’s buck that trend and have good numbers for this one.

Apologies by Friday 9 September please

August 2022 Meeting Report; Summer BBQ

Dominic our catering officer organised a summer event based at the Nags Head Scalby, partners and guests were invited to join in. The event was well attended and all appeared to enjoy themselves.

The weather was geat and we enjoyed not only a few drinks but a pleasant meal prepared by Arthur’s catering van in the rear courtyard at the pub.
