October 2016 meeting report: Lazenby’s Restaurant Gourmet Evening

Bonjour October !

October’s meeting took the form of a visit to Lazenby’s restaurant on York Place, hosted superbly by Simon and Valerie Lazenby, where we were treated to a taste of France. The meal comprised of an excellent selection of appetisers consisting of both meat and fish dishes, almost a meal in itself.

The main course was an exceptional beef dish with pasta accompanied by Broccoli, very enjoyable.

Desert was again a medley of delights which was to die for !

The great food was accompanied by a wine tasting with fine wines provided by Peter MacLennan of Yorkshire Vintners. We were treated to five wines during the course of the evening sweets from vinyards as far apart as Germany, France, Italy and South Africa !

If you did not attend you missed out on one of the best evenings of the year which was the fine food and drink evening !

September 2016 meeting report

An Evening with Robin Hood and his Motley Men or Forty-Oners get their Chips !

A guest archer shows how it is done.

A guest archer shows how it is done.

The September evening took the form of a taste of Archery with Scarborough Archery based at Osgodby, with a good number of 41 club members taking the opportunity to squeeze into their Lincoln Green tights and mince around a field at Osgodby giving rise to shocked looks from the locals. After endangering more than one life with excitable firing Simon Lockley took first place for maximum points achieved without killing any person or animal. Our esteemed Secretary who had won the 2015 event left early in disgust to comfort himself with a plate of fish & chips.

Following the archery experience the 41clubers met at Walkers Fish Restaurant for a fish supper up to the excellent standard you can always expect at Walkers.

Following the meal Avis Turner director of Basics Plus gave members an overview of the good works of the Basics Plus charity in enabling those with learning difficulties to gain supported experience of work and make the most of their potential. Chairman Gordon reminded members present that Basics Plus was Scarborough 41 Club’s chosen charity for 2016 and that the Club’s November meeting would take the form of a fun Casino evening to take place at the Crown Spa Hotel aiming to raise money for the charity. Members’ attendance at the event would be covered by their monthly direct debit.

The business element of the evening took the form of the induction of Charles Hindle as a welcome new member of the Club.

Meeting report: Quoits, 5 July 2016

Many thanks to everyone who attended the Quoits evening at Beck Hole on 5 July 2016. It was well attended with a good mix from 41 club, round table and FARTs with the weather been a perfect summers evening.

After a very close competition the winners were Richard Grunwell and Richard Frank having won 4 games and no losses. The same score was also matched by last years champions Michael Whiteley and Dave Ascough but on count back of points conceded per game the two Richards proved victorious.

I would also like to thank John Morley the chairman of the Beck hole Quoits club and all the members who assisted on the night for their time and patience and to thank Glenys the landlady of the Birch Hall pub for opening for us for beers and food.

Thank you to everyone and let’s hope to have a rematch next year.

Thanks
Darren

AGM 2016: meeting photos

There’s no report, at least until the Secretary finds the minutes so ably recorded by JQE.

March 2016 food and drink connoisseurs meeting at Jeremy’s

March’s 41 club meeting took the form of the ever popular food and wine connoisseurs meeting when we were treated to posh versions of the stable 41 club fare in as much as Leak and Potato soup, Shepherd’s Pie and Sticky Toffee Pudding for afters.

The wines provided were a very pleasant organic white from the Barone di Villagrand vinyard on Sicily.

Main course was accompanied by a nice red being a Chilean Sauvignon Cabinet from the Gran Hacienda vineyard

The Sticky Toffee pudding was served with a French desert wine which was as rich and fruity as you would expect a good dessert wine to be.
Wilkco gave the vote of thanks

The only disappointing point of the evening was the usual non apologies which left three tables unoccupied and food wasted.

Report on the February 2016 Chinese Meal 41 Club Meeting

The February meeting was held at the Kam Sang Chinese Restaurant on North Marine Road.

A pint in “Indigo Alley” was a good starting point, where I enjoyed a nice pint of Indigo Bitter (worth a try!). Sadly, I missed the ritual of the emergence of the moths when our glorious Secretary opened his wallet to buy the drinks……..allegedly.

The tables for our meal were spread out in the centre of the restaurant, resulting in a number tables with three persons and upwards. The restaurant was quite busy and people seemed to be coming and going all the time.

A three-course meal was provided, comprising the starter (Prawn Toast, Crab Meat, Spare Ribs and Seaweed), a second course of Crispy Duck, Hoisin Sauce, Cucumber and Lettuce and, finally, a number of typical Chinese dishes with Boiled Rice. The quality of the food was good and, perhaps, the quantity was more than was necessary. It was a shame to see a lot of food wasted because people were replete. The service was slow but that is good for the digestion!

There was no speaker for the meeting and there was no business other than Simon advising that the next meeting would be held on Thursday 10th March at Jeremy’s and will be a wine-tasting evening (I suggest that you double-check the booking, Simon!).

A good evening was had by all and the food had been very enjoyable. A good evening of fellowship!

Richard Coulson

Thanks Richard !

Burns Night Report January 2016

Report on Burns Night Meeting at Fledglings Restaurant on 14 January 2016

A pleasing 27 members of 41 Club including several members not seen for some time and 5 members of Round Table attended the early Burns Night Meal at Fledglings Restaurant at Yorkshire Coast College which Chairman Richard described as a 41 Club meeting with Round Table in attendance as guests. There were 2 other guests in attendance Ed Asquith and all the way from Australia Alan Gammel.

An enjoyable meal made up of typical Scottish ingredients including smoked salmon, haggis, neeps, taties, venison, cranachan and cloutie dumpling was well cooked and served by Yorkshire Coast Colleges second year catering students who were thanked by Chairman Richard for their sterling efforts on behalf of the members.
Tim Draper from Round Table addressed the haggis before stabbing it with a knife in time honoured tradition using a knife provided by the College and not the dirk he had stuffed down his sock and for entertainment after the meal Jim McCann also from Round Table read a mercifully short poem by the great Scottish bard called “Bottle and Friend”
Included with the meal was a shot of whisky. Several attempts were made by whisky aficionados to identify the whisky. Was it from Speyside or Islay – only for their pretentiousness to be exposed when one of the students appeared from the kitchen carrying a bottle of bog standard Bells!
The meeting concluded with reports from the various officers including one from the Sports Officer Jim Hughes reporting that regrettably doe to the recent wet weather all games involving members of the Club had had to be postponed but he did promise a full programme of sporting events as soon as the weather improved and ended with the usual toast to RTBI

December 2015 Curry Night Meeting

The December meeting involved a “festive” meal at Scarborough’s Eastern Paradise, excellent food

as ever although the service was a bit slow. Plenty of Poppadoms and the usual pickle tray and a

good and varied banquet.

Unfortunately for Simon the catering officer non apology attendance was high leaving five empty

seats, please make sure you apologise to save you money and the club the embarrassment at the

venue.

The Treasure being on his hols those attending were able to keep their loose cash in their pocket

with no charity box to do the rounds.

The chairman reminded members that the next me

eting is Burns’ Night on 14 January 2016 which will

be the black tie
