November 2015 Race Night report

Background
– Whilst 41 Club has gained some new members in recent years, it was proposed that we should raise the profile via a ‘Membership Evening’
– The immediate advice from Round Table members who had tried a similar event, was that actually badging the evening with the word ‘Membership’ was guaranteed to frighten off any invited guests
– The Membership Officer – Simon Lockley -therefore formed a committee consisting of Richard Grunwell/ Steve Slade/ Simon Ward plus Ben Kitto flying the flag for RT88 to agree a way forward. We also had guest appearances from Mike Shingler & Nigel Sheppard, and David Henderson promoted the event online
– It was decided to host some type of social event, and this was rapidly followed by the notion of making this into a Race Night to generate some funds for seriously ill children
Progress
– The Membership Officer then spent an exhausting 3 months delegating tasks to others
– The Race Night started to take shape, and by ‘D Day’ – 20 November – Yorkshire Race Nights had been booked to appear at Scarborough Rugby Club, and 110 people had booked a place
– Jenny Slade plus her friend Victoria, and Elaine Lockley kindly spent several hours decorating the room with items donated by Boyes Stores
The Event
– There were a few last minute cancellations and additions but 106 people attended, with Ian Costello parting them from their money at the door.
– Scarborough Rugby Club donated a very large room free of charge and sponsorship from local companies underpinned costs and got us off to a head start. Thanks to: Lloyd Dowson/ David Duggleby/ Brian Davidson/ Raflatac/ Moore Stephens/ Pinkney Grunwells/ Care Micro/ plus Boyes
– Alan Collins – Ambassador for Children’s Wish – drove all the way up from Coventry to explain how the organisation provided customised ‘wishes’ to brighten the lives of children undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious conditions
– Simon L & Ben Kitto kicked off the event with a brief welcome then handed over to Tyrone from Yorkshire Race Nights.
– Simon Ward & Jim Hughes manned theTote and the racing started, pausing only for some excellent pie , chips & peas at 8.30pm plus a raffle hosted by Tony Peers assisted by Samantha Lockley
– Stuart Baines was tasked with capturing a record of the event

Conclusion
– Steve Slade arranged for money from the various sources to be counted during the event, and he was able to step forward at about 11pm to thank people for attending and announce a provisional net joint donation from 41 Club & RT88 of £2,000
– The local press are going to be invited to a formal handover of the money to Children’s Wish, and contact details to be supplied to encourage potential new members to get in touch.

October 2015 Club Meeting : Children’s Wish

For our October event the venue was The Crescent, the food was first class as ever with a starter of

Salmon Pate, a huge Barnsley Chop for mains and Chocolate Brownie for pud, who could ask for

more ?!

Catering officer Simon was in buoyant mood having guessed the attendance correctly and only two

seats without back sides in place.

The speaker was Tabler Allan from Coventry 23 Round Table who are promoting the Children’s Wish

charity which aims to bring dreams to reality for seriously ill children. Allan explained that the

difference of Children’s Wish to similar charities is that each wish big or small is customised to the

wish of the child in question, and also allows siblings and up to two adults to join the child in the

experience.

Children’s Wishes have been such as trips to Disneyland and meeting their favourite characters

when there which make a big difference to the children and their families.

Scarborough 41 Club and Scarborough Round Table are to hold a joint fundraising evening at

Scarborough Rugby Club on 20 November for Children’s Wish. The evening is to be a Race

Night with a Pie and Pea supper. Cost £ 15.00 per head although the November meeting subs will

cover the cost for 41 Club members and partners.

Members are encouraged to bring wives/partners and guests. Simon Lockley is the main promoter

and would appreciate numbers to the Treasurer by 14 November.

Double our Quoits again

Assorted Tablers, F.A.R.T.s and 41ers descended on Beck Hole, near Goathland, on Tuesday 21 July for this, the second annual three-way challenge at the ancient game of Quoits.

This type of quoits isn’t throwing your little rubber ring up to a pathetic little board with picture hooks on it. Oh no. These quoits can remove a leg (or worse) if you get in the way. And grown men have been known to sink without trace having put a foot wrong in t’ mud pit. And, of course, anyone foolish enough to park anywhere near the pitch had a nervous few hours as the band mastered this skilled game and quoits crashed, banged and walloped all around the village.

The multitude also very quickly mastered the walk to the pub, too, returning (eventually) to the pitch carrying several pints of the Birch Hall Inn’s “Beckwatter”. This caused untold grief to the poor sod who was trying to organise the competition but, after the third pint, it didn’t matter. The excellent chaps from the Beck Hole Quoits Club had a good laugh as they pretended enthusiasm at our efforts.

Chairman Richard thanked them warmly in the pub afterwards when pies and sarnies were the order of the day evening. The Quoits Club charge us £5 per head which they then immediately pass on as a charity donation to Yorkshire Air Ambulance (an important service when a smashed ankle is a real possibility  – certainly, at least, when Table played).

The eventual winners were the team of the F.A.R.T.s Chairman and Secretary, Messrs Ascough and Whiteley respectively.

As they are both 41 Clubbers, too, we’ll take the positive out of that.

A great evening with great folk at a superb venue.

Couldn’t resist including this – a certain person’s (ahem) winning shot from one of the games.

May 2015 meeting photographs

No report as yet, but Stuart took his camera along for some more great pics of the walk and the Bryherstones.

Our new Chairman looked the part for his first meeting with brand-new Goretex pin-stripes befitting his status as a bit of a rambler.

Tuscany Too meeting report 12 February 2015

The evening spent at Tuscany Too began with Jim Hughes instructing me not to mention England’s rampant victory over Wales the previous weekend. So I won’t.

After several members had contacted their banks to take out a loan to buy a round of drinks, Chairman Dave welcomed everyone to the meeting, and Tom Cathcart delivered a nearly word perfect Table grace.

The Italian three course meal, with a choice at each course, was well received by members who commented on the quality of the food. Conversation was rich and diverse. Mike Shingler shared his views on the human digestive system after the age of forty, although Simon Lockley considered his musings pasta joke.

It was an excellent evening for committee members’ reports – there were none. This allowed Chairman Dave to proceed to introduce the guest speaker, Jim Dillon, Chief Executive of Scarborough Borough Council. There is a possibility that some of his introduction may have been fabricated.

Following a self-deprecating reflection on his colourful but incomprehensible accent, Jim updated us on several current local hot topics. The planned water park slides will rival those in Dubai, the outdoor swimming pool will be heated 37 degrees centigrade, the Futurist theatre will be replaced by a glorified escalator, the Weaponness sports village will bring the town’s football club back to Scarborough, and the area will include the development of a technical to college and university campus. Many of the plans and proposals sound exciting. Here’s hoping they materialise………

There followed a question and answer session which ranged from the A64 to the potential potash mine, and all points in between.

Richard Grunwell proposed a vote of thanks to Jim Dillon for the giving of his time to speak to us, and the evening finished with the usual toast to RTBI. Home for a (relatively) late Horlicks…..

Meeting report: Burns’ Night at Fledglings, 22 January 2015

Hoots mon, it’s a braw, bricht, moonlicht nicht, well and it was such a night when we all arrived at Yorkshire Coast College for a traditional Burns night supper. I STILL don’t understand why the English find the need to celebrate Burns’ night, heavens we will soon have a Dylan Thomas breakfast or a Wordsworth weekend.

Anyway I digress, the evening was well attended with 29 members, including 5 tablers (minus their Chairman and Vice Chairman) present, mostly in dress suits and a small number in skirts. The 4 who did not apologise know who they are and their financial contribution to the evening was very much appreciated by all who attended.

The evening commenced with a piper who piped the haggis in and one of the chaps in skirts said a few words, mostly in a foreign language and then grace was read (?) by the youngest of the visiting Tablers and we all sat down to a 5 course feast.

The starter being smoked salmon with Bellinis, followed by Haggis, bashed neeps (poor things) and champit tatties (no idea what they are but they were delicious).

The main course was venison followed by a plate of miniature Scottish deserts then coffee and petit fours. The meal was beautifully served by the students of the college who year after year still provide a high standard of service.

Once the coffee was finished it was then down to business and our secretary was called upon to report: Caw canny (meaning “Go easy/Don’t overdo it”) was his message so he didn’t overdo it and sat down.

Out from the crowd came “Gie’s a shot then! (meaning “Let me have a turn now”) and it was the finance officer who proclaimed all paid up and then sat down.

Finally it was the catering officer who reminded us all of the next meeting at Tuscany Two on February 12th.

The meeting concluded with RTBI.

And for those of you who did not attend:

“Ye missed yersel last night” meaning “You missed out on a good time last night”

Christmas Curry !

The December meeting took the age old 41 club traditional to the usual seasonal venue, a Curry House and very good it was too with the Curry Leaf’s slightly different Asian food ready to be enjoyed. There was a grand display of dishes some mild while others had that extra kick.

There was the usual good turn out for this “seasonal” event so maybe there is a demand for international food, indeed catering officer Simon mentioned that there was an Italian night coming up before the year end [Tuscany Too – Ed].

To cap off the December meeting Simon provided an excellent quiz including identification of old Scarborough street scenes which considering there was a combined Scarborough age well into the thousands at the meeting still proved a considerable challenge !
