Your esteemed chairman achieved yet another mega goal on the 5th October. In true explorer fashion, he completed the last two of the 214 Wainwrights ( hills over 304.8m -1000ft in old money- in the lake District). Ably accompanied by his sherpas, Stuart Baines, Ian Brabbs, Simon Ward and Mike Whiteley (unfortunately our other usual walkers, Richard Coulson and Gordon Hayes couldn’t make it), he choose one of the wettest and windiest days seen in the Lakes all year to undertake the task. The 8 mile circuit included peat haggs, raging torrents and rutting stags. To celebrate, we had a tot of whisky at the top. Funnily enough, it is perhaps the only time we’ve been on a trek in the Lakes and not seen another walker at all!!
Well done that man, and as promised, I haven’t mentioned the following day’s ramble in brilliant sunshine around Low and High Force in Upper Teesdale!
As Peter and Ian try to navigate out of the car park, Mike indicates the verticality of the ascent.
Rest Dodd from the route up via Heyeswater Gill (described in wainwright as a gentil babbling brook)
Wainwright 213 Rest Dodd (696m)
Route to The Nab from Rest Dodd- note peat haggs and rutting stags ahead
Wainwright 214 The Nab (576m)
Can it get any wetter? Yes it can!
All smiles on the way down, but we have to go up to go down. For Richard Coulson’s benefit- its technically all downhill from here
