May 2022 Meeting Report – AGM Part 2

The second part of our AGM was held on Thursday 26/05/22 at Geo’s Scarborough. The event was well attended, with the most notable attendee being incoming Chairman Pete Calow who had been forced to to miss the AGM Part 1.

Geo’s was an innovative choice of venue, with good food and service. However, there was quite a lot of background noise generated from the restaurant below, making discussion somewhat challenging. Incoming Chairman Peter therefore opted to deliver most of his prepared speech via this report – please see below:

‘Those of you that know me will be hugely relieved that there’s to be no long rambling speech at this point, but just one or two bullet points to set out.

Apologies for my non-attendance at the AGM, owing as many of you know to Covid within the household, and a surfeit of caution regarding this.

Firstly, many thanks to David and all on his committee for their fine efforts last year.

After the vote at the National AGM to open-up the new membership requirements, our own club rules will need reconsideration to account for this. The committee will have a look at this. Along with other 41 Clubs, we are moving with the times in that Charles Hindle is our new Vice Chairman. He will be the first non ex Round Table member to join the Scarborough 41 Club committee, and I’m sure you will all join me in congratulating Charles on this.

I am conscious of the fact that the Aalten visits have ceased during the pandemic, and that we need to try to organise fresh contacts with Aalten, despite the difficulties that the small membership of Round Table now presents. Aalten are due to visit us again, and are reportedly keen to do so, and so we will try to set things in motion during the next year.’

Peter Calow

(Peter then added a PS at the end of his email ‘At least no bad jokes feature above’. Not sure if he was having a go at yours truly, but then again, if the cap fits…).

All in all, it was a watershed moment for outgoing Chairman Dave. Not only was he handing over the 41 Club reins to Peter, but the following day was his last day at work before retiring. This came as a surprise to many members, as Dave has never seemed to age like the rest of us. Painting in the attic maybe? (Like in the story of Dorian Gray – come on gentlemen – keep up).

Peter therefore made one of his first duties proposing a toast to Dave, to wish him a happy retirement, before ending the meeting with RTBI.

THE UNVARNISHED TRUTH by ALTERNATIVE REPORTER

In place of the planned visit to SeaGrown on the Southern Star moored in the harbour to learn all about the cultivation and harvesting of seaweed which was cancelled at the last minute (will we ever succeed with this visit?) those members with a thirst to quench met in the Leeds Arms for a pre-meeting drink before been chivvied by John White into leaving at 7.30pm to walk to the restaurant in time for the second part of the AGM and the induction of our new Chairman.

Although we had the sole use of the upper floor of the restaurant the noise from the ground floor and the sound system made life difficult for the outgoing Chairman Dave, the Secretary Mike and the incoming Chairman Peter to be heard. The silver lining in the cloud was that Peter was unable to entertain us with his pre-prepared half hour address and limited his remarks to thanking David and his team for their efforts over a difficult period.

The Chairman’s regalia was duly handed over and the past Chairman’s jewel presented with David H (standing in for Stuart who was absent sailing around the Baltic Sea looking for Russian submarines in the absence of any whales) doing the honours with the camara.

The absence of table settings having become apparent the growing concerns of members about when and where they were going to eat was assuaged when plates albeit somewhat small and cutlery was placed on the tables by the restaurant staff. A series of tapas style dishes soon followed and the reason for the small plates became apparent.

Your reporter, David H and Nigel waited patiently as other tables were served a variety of dishes but nothing arrived until one table showed some sympathy by sharing their roasted green peppers. The noise of furniture being eaten finally drew the attention of the restaurant staff who initially explained that the correct number of meals had been served but were persuaded that additional food should be served to the starving trio. Further enquiry revealed that the restaurant had served 2 tables of 10 and 1 of 5. A quick count revealed that there were in fact 2 tables of 8 and 9 who had scoffed the trio’s share!

Several small plates later a satisfying meal ended with a miniature burger, fries and a salad.

With the noise levels from the ground floor having reduced Chairman Peter was able to make himself heard to propose a toast to Former Chairman Dave on the eve of his last working day before taking a well-earned retirement.

There was no other business and the meeting ended with the usual toast to RTBI.

Successful Charity Night

Thanks to all who organised, attended and contributed to the extremely successful charity evening held at Scarborough Rugby Club in aid of Scarborough Disabled Swimming, the evening featured dancing and music by along with an entertaining interlude by “Twylight“ a high quality entertainment package including a large choir at the start of the evening and continuing to dancers and singer as the evening progressed, Twilight added sparkle to a well-attended event.

‘The evening also included a short play ‘The Carol Police’ written by Keith Johnson which gave a light-hearted take on how traditional carols could be viewed by over-zealous officialdom. The play – which has a clever twist at the end – was produced by arrangement with ‘Pint-size plays’.

A great evening was had and a total of £ 1600 was raised for the local charity which is Scarborough Disabled Swimming, the charity helps people with a disability and their family/carers access the benefits of swimming, may this be through swimming for leisure, sport or rehabilitation.

October Meeting – Indian Banquet

Thursday 12 October (apologies by Friday 6 October)
The evening starts by meeting in THE SCARBOROUGH FLYER on St Nicholas Street from 6.30pm. This newly refurbished pub sells fine cask ales at very reasonable prices. And it’s only 3 minute walk from

EASTERN PARADISE, opposite the Market

I am arranging that we are treated to the SPECIAL BANQUET  which few people seem to know about but which is superb. One of the dishes is Bangladeshi curried fish which is divine. Part of the evening will consist on sitting down to an ice cold pint of COBRA lager.

A welcome for the the President of New Zealand RT

Mark Smith is an excellent past RT88 Tabler who emigrated to NZ 6 years ago. He worked as a Podiatrist in Scarborough and fully engaged in International tabling while he was living in the U.K.  When he moved to Christchurch he re-energised Table on the South Island and is now President  of New Zealand Roundtable and he stopped off in Scarborough as part of his Euro tour of table. I met up with him and his wife Anna in a local hostelry we exchanged stories and shared concerns about the transition from Table to 41 clubs across the world.

PS. And Mike Shingler says he was a very good elf!

Archery Night

Many thanks to all who attended the joint 41club and farts archery evening  Thursday July 27th .  It was a close competition this year but the winner again for the second year running with a magnificent score of 320 out of 414  was reigning champion Malcolm Smith. Great shooting Malcolm and  a big congratulations to you  from us all.

The evening was well attended and luckily the weather stayed warm and dry followed by a few beers and a nice meal at Byways.

A special thanks to  Scarborough archers for their patience, guidance and for helping us find the stray arrows

John Naylor (scarborough archers secretary) says they are actively looking for new members and everyone is welcome to join them for a practice.

I will post some pictures of the event onto the website  as soon as I receive them.

July BBQ Final Arrangements

Hi fellow BBQ enthusiasts

The weather is reasonable ( ie no rain ) for Saturday and we are now over 30 attendees, which is great.

For those of you who haven’t been to the beautiful house and gardens of the Edwards family known as Fishermans Cottage, East Ayton, it is best to approach on foot from A170 up the road to Forge Valley and is the first house on the left. There will be some blue and white balloons flying at the entrance.

Anybody sensibly thinking of coming by taxi should use the East Ayton garage as the stop off and pickup point.

Because this is an ‘opt in ‘ event payment of £15 per head is payable on the night in cash to Simon Ward who tells me that he has been trained in the dark arts of extracting money from Yorkshire folk. Rather him than me !

Look forward to seeing you all on the night.

July BBQ Change of Plan

I am pleased to confirm that we have a good sized albeit motley crew lined up for a Greek styled BBQ feast on 15th July at Fishermans Cottage!
However, there is some BAD NEWS ?
Despite sterling efforts over the last six weeks by our host JQE the trip round Ayton Castle is OFF! JQE has at the last minute been told that there are apparently insurmountable insurance issues surrounding so many people, potentially, making the visit! John’s confirmation that only about three members of 41 Club have even got the wind to do the trip has cut no ice apparently!

GOOD NEWS
There is always good news. If we don’t go round the Castle then NOBODY WILL GET LOST or fall over a protruding medieval shin bone and stub a toe, fatally! Also, we won’t lose half our number to The Forge Valley pub – think about it ! Sending out search parties to find out where the hell everyone is ?? So it’s all for the good, really.

John and Jenny and Jessica and I look forward to seeing you all for a cracking good do at 5pm onwards on Saturday

Quoits Meeting

A big thank you to everybody who competed at the Quoits Championship 2017.  It was a fantastic evening with a good turnout . The weather was beautiful and good to finish off with a few beers.

It was a very close contest this year with the winners being Mike Whiteley and Dave Ascough by the skin of their teeth.  Well done to both of you.

Thanks to John and his team from the Quoits club for their support and to Glenys at the Beck Hole Pub for catering for us.
Overall a great evening so thanks again to everybody.
Darren
