March’s 41 club meeting took the form of the ever popular food and wine connoisseurs meeting when we were treated to posh versions of the stable 41 club fare in as much as Leak and Potato soup, Shepherd’s Pie and Sticky Toffee Pudding for afters.
The wines provided were a very pleasant organic white from the Barone di Villagrand vinyard on Sicily.
Main course was accompanied by a nice red being a Chilean Sauvignon Cabinet from the Gran Hacienda vineyard
The Sticky Toffee pudding was served with a French desert wine which was as rich and fruity as you would expect a good dessert wine to be.
Wilkco gave the vote of thanks
The only disappointing point of the evening was the usual non apologies which left three tables unoccupied and food wasted.

Report on Burns Night Meeting at Fledglings Restaurant on 14 January 2016
A pleasing 27 members of 41 Club including several members not seen for some time and 5 members of Round Table attended the early Burns Night Meal at Fledglings Restaurant at Yorkshire Coast College which Chairman Richard described as a 41 Club meeting with Round Table in attendance as guests. There were 2 other guests in attendance Ed Asquith and all the way from Australia Alan Gammel.
An enjoyable meal made up of typical Scottish ingredients including smoked salmon, haggis, neeps, taties, venison, cranachan and cloutie dumpling was well cooked and served by Yorkshire Coast Colleges second year catering students who were thanked by Chairman Richard for their sterling efforts on behalf of the members.
Tim Draper from Round Table addressed the haggis before stabbing it with a knife in time honoured tradition using a knife provided by the College and not the dirk he had stuffed down his sock and for entertainment after the meal Jim McCann also from Round Table read a mercifully short poem by the great Scottish bard called “Bottle and Friend”
Included with the meal was a shot of whisky. Several attempts were made by whisky aficionados to identify the whisky. Was it from Speyside or Islay – only for their pretentiousness to be exposed when one of the students appeared from the kitchen carrying a bottle of bog standard Bells!
The meeting concluded with reports from the various officers including one from the Sports Officer Jim Hughes reporting that regrettably doe to the recent wet weather all games involving members of the Club had had to be postponed but he did promise a full programme of sporting events as soon as the weather improved and ended with the usual toast to RTBI

Thanks Ian, Ed (SB)

The December meeting involved a “festive” meal at Scarborough’s Eastern Paradise, excellent food
as ever although the service was a bit slow. Plenty of Poppadoms and the usual pickle tray and a
good and varied banquet.
Unfortunately for Simon the catering officer non apology attendance was high leaving five empty
seats, please make sure you apologise to save you money and the club the embarrassment at the
venue.
The Treasure being on his hols those attending were able to keep their loose cash in their pocket
with no charity box to do the rounds.
The chairman reminded members that the next me
eting is Burns’ Night on 14 January 2016 which will
be the black tie

For our October event the venue was The Crescent, the food was first class as ever with a starter of
Salmon Pate, a huge Barnsley Chop for mains and Chocolate Brownie for pud, who could ask for
more ?!
Catering officer Simon was in buoyant mood having guessed the attendance correctly and only two
seats without back sides in place.
The speaker was Tabler Allan from Coventry 23 Round Table who are promoting the Children’s Wish
charity which aims to bring dreams to reality for seriously ill children. Allan explained that the
difference of Children’s Wish to similar charities is that each wish big or small is customised to the
wish of the child in question, and also allows siblings and up to two adults to join the child in the
experience.
Children’s Wishes have been such as trips to Disneyland and meeting their favourite characters
when there which make a big difference to the children and their families.
Scarborough 41 Club and Scarborough Round Table are to hold a joint fundraising evening at
Scarborough Rugby Club on 20 November for Children’s Wish. The evening is to be a Race
Night with a Pie and Pea supper. Cost £ 15.00 per head although the November meeting subs will
cover the cost for 41 Club members and partners.
Members are encouraged to bring wives/partners and guests. Simon Lockley is the main promoter
and would appreciate numbers to the Treasurer by 14 November.

I must congratulate Scarborough Round Table on a highly successful 80th Charter celebration.
Although numbers were down, everything went well and the atmosphere was great. As you can imagine, our Dutch visitors threw themselves into the celebrations with enthusiasm.
Our 41 Club guests arrived on Thursday evening, flying from Dusseldorf to Leeds; meaning they had less of a rush when returning on Sunday; one Tabler arrived by car on the Saturday but the rest flew into Leeds on Friday morning and were taken via York marina, Sam Smith’s brewery and various hostelries to arrive at the appointed welcome point, the Downe Arms. Thanks to all those who provided the transport from and to the airport.
On Friday evening, we were joined by Tablers’ families at Betton Farm for a Hog Roast and music; an early start to the evening was designed to allow for a good rest before the morrow. Some took advantage of that!
We were not sure what to expect for Beach Games, the following morning but, whilst some played badminton, others appreciated the opportunity to visit the MAP site for more boystrous fun with zombies and paint-balling, thanks to new Tabler David Hooper (inducted on the Saturday evening). Lunch followed; fish & chips at the Blue Crush. And so to Scarborough Castle for an entertaining, interactive history lesson from our guide, Eliott; a man who clearly enjoys his job and brought the Castle to life!
All appreciated the free time in the late afternoon in the excellent weather to prepare for the main event of the weekend.
Richard & Daphne at the Crown Spa put on a great event for us; thanks to them.
Superbly choreographed by MC Chris Redford the evening ran smoothly with good food and service, the room attractively decorated and Magic Mike doing his table magic followed by a disco.
Good speeches from Terry Cooper, 41 Club National President, the two Table Chairmen Ben and Rogier, and a Shingler Special as he slurred his monologue.Presents were exchanged: fine clogs from Aalten Club and an 88 deckchair from Scarborough. The traditional cabarets were enjoyed by the assembled company and several Scarborough Tablers’ wives were heard to comment that Dutch Tablers dance!
The more prudent guests retired in good time, but the Master of Ceremonies took his duties seriously and left the Casino at dawn.
Breakfast at the Crown Spa was followed by words of farewell and appreciation of a good weekend and promises to reconvene in Aalten in 2½ years time.
Scarborough 41 Club special guests were (on the Friday evening and Sunday breakfast) Mick Thorpe and Tom Pindar (Saturday evening) with, of course, their good ladies Sheila and Margery. Mick and Tom were two of the original party that went to Holland and began twinning with Aalten all those years ago.
Thank you, Ben, and all your members for all your efforts.

Table Chairman Ben Kitto and his team have put together a great weekend of events at which they hope that all ex-Tablers will join Scarborough Round Table No 88 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the issue of the Table Charter and to meet with friends old and new from Aalten.
If you would like to make a late booking, you still can, via this booking form. Just choose the events you wish to participate in.
