Successful Charity Night

Thanks to all who organised, attended and contributed to the extremely successful charity evening held at Scarborough Rugby Club in aid of Scarborough Disabled Swimming, the evening featured dancing and music by along with an entertaining interlude by “Twylight“ a high quality entertainment package including a large choir at the start of the evening and continuing to dancers and singer as the evening progressed, Twilight added sparkle to a well-attended event.

‘The evening also included a short play ‘The Carol Police’ written by Keith Johnson which gave a light-hearted take on how traditional carols could be viewed by over-zealous officialdom. The play – which has a clever twist at the end – was produced by arrangement with ‘Pint-size plays’.

A great evening was had and a total of £ 1600 was raised for the local charity which is Scarborough Disabled Swimming, the charity helps people with a disability and their family/carers access the benefits of swimming, may this be through swimming for leisure, sport or rehabilitation.

Appreciation from RT Children’s Wish for our fundraising

Sent to the Treasurer

14th March 16

Dear Stephen

Thank you so much to Scarborough 41 Club for the fantastic donation of £1900 which you raised at your Race Night held at Scarborough Rugby Club. Your generosity and hard work will help us grant wishes for some truly inspirational children. Your support is so appreciated, and just to give you an idea of how your donation will be spent, I thought you would be interested to hear about one of the wishes we have recently granted.
“It was absolutely smashing. The pictures say it all of how much she enjoyed it, so thank you so much, so many memories made.”
mikaylaMikayla, age 4, is suffering from a brain tumour. Her wish was to be turned in to a Princess for the day, and so we were delighted to grant her wish.
The family travelled to London and visited the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in Harrods where the transformation began. Mikayla was met by the Fairy Godmothers who took great care of her. Mikayla had her make up applied and hair styled with lots of bows and jewels. Once she slipped in to her Elsa dress and sparkly shoes she became Princess Mikayla! She looked absolutely stunning and just couldn’t stop smiling. She went away with her own Princess make up case and lots of wonderful pictures.
Mum said she raised lots ofsmiles from people when they headed back on the tube to the hotel! The following day the family travelled over to Hyde Park to enjoy the Winter Wonderland. They spent some time walking around the Ice kingdom as well as a fun visit to the family circus. Mikayla enjoyed lots of the fairground rides and also a visit to Santa. The family also managed to enjoy all the Christmas lights and a visit to Hamley’s.
Mum said “It was absolutely smashing. The pictures say it all of how much she enjoyed it, so thank you so much, many memories made.”
Your support will enable us to grant wishes for some truly remarkable young people at a time when their outcomes are uncertain.
Please remember to “Like us” on Facebook and “Follow us” on Twitter “rtchildrenswish” to keep up to date with all the wishes we grant. If you would like to receive regular updates then please subscribe at www.rtcw.org.
Thank you once again for your kind support.

Cassandra Gagnon – Community Fundraising Worker

Scarborough 41 Club gives a Christmas gift to the Salvation Army

Members of Scarborough 41 Club have donated a timely Christmas gift in the shape of a cheque for £400 to help the local Salvation Army with their busy work at this special time of year.

Salvation Army representative Nigel Wood who accepted the cheque from 41 Club said that they expected to be very busy over the next few weeks and that the funds would help those in need a great deal.

Scarborough 41 Club and Round Table charity race night proves a good bet!

Scarborough 41 Club and Round Table recently joined forces to arrange a Race Night to raise money for the Round Table Children’s Wish appeal which arranges ‘Wishes’ to cheer the lives of seriously ill children and their families, be it a trip to Disneyland or meeting a pop star.

The event was held in November in a large function room donated free of charge by Scarborough Rugby Club, and attracted sponsorship from a number of local firms:

  • Lloyd Dowson
  • David Duggleby
  • Brian Davidson
  • Raflatac
  • Moore Stephens
  • Pinkney Grunwells
  • Care Micro
  • Boyes Stores

Organised by a joint committee of Richard Grunwell, Steve Slade, Simon Ward, Ben Kitto, Mike Shingler and chaired by Simon Lockley, the event raised a total of £2,000, and was attended by 108 people including Round Table Children’s Wish representative Alan Collins who travelled all the way from Coventry for the evening!

November 2015 Race Night report

Background
– Whilst 41 Club has gained some new members in recent years, it was proposed that we should raise the profile via a ‘Membership Evening’
– The immediate advice from Round Table members who had tried a similar event, was that actually badging the evening with the word ‘Membership’ was guaranteed to frighten off any invited guests
– The Membership Officer – Simon Lockley -therefore formed a committee consisting of Richard Grunwell/ Steve Slade/ Simon Ward plus Ben Kitto flying the flag for RT88 to agree a way forward. We also had guest appearances from Mike Shingler & Nigel Sheppard, and David Henderson promoted the event online
– It was decided to host some type of social event, and this was rapidly followed by the notion of making this into a Race Night to generate some funds for seriously ill children
Progress
– The Membership Officer then spent an exhausting 3 months delegating tasks to others
– The Race Night started to take shape, and by ‘D Day’ – 20 November – Yorkshire Race Nights had been booked to appear at Scarborough Rugby Club, and 110 people had booked a place
– Jenny Slade plus her friend Victoria, and Elaine Lockley kindly spent several hours decorating the room with items donated by Boyes Stores
The Event
– There were a few last minute cancellations and additions but 106 people attended, with Ian Costello parting them from their money at the door.
– Scarborough Rugby Club donated a very large room free of charge and sponsorship from local companies underpinned costs and got us off to a head start. Thanks to: Lloyd Dowson/ David Duggleby/ Brian Davidson/ Raflatac/ Moore Stephens/ Pinkney Grunwells/ Care Micro/ plus Boyes
– Alan Collins – Ambassador for Children’s Wish – drove all the way up from Coventry to explain how the organisation provided customised ‘wishes’ to brighten the lives of children undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious conditions
– Simon L & Ben Kitto kicked off the event with a brief welcome then handed over to Tyrone from Yorkshire Race Nights.
– Simon Ward & Jim Hughes manned theTote and the racing started, pausing only for some excellent pie , chips & peas at 8.30pm plus a raffle hosted by Tony Peers assisted by Samantha Lockley
– Stuart Baines was tasked with capturing a record of the event

Conclusion
– Steve Slade arranged for money from the various sources to be counted during the event, and he was able to step forward at about 11pm to thank people for attending and announce a provisional net joint donation from 41 Club & RT88 of £2,000
– The local press are going to be invited to a formal handover of the money to Children’s Wish, and contact details to be supplied to encourage potential new members to get in touch.

October 2015 Club Meeting : Children’s Wish

For our October event the venue was The Crescent, the food was first class as ever with a starter of

Salmon Pate, a huge Barnsley Chop for mains and Chocolate Brownie for pud, who could ask for

more ?!

Catering officer Simon was in buoyant mood having guessed the attendance correctly and only two

seats without back sides in place.

The speaker was Tabler Allan from Coventry 23 Round Table who are promoting the Children’s Wish

charity which aims to bring dreams to reality for seriously ill children. Allan explained that the

difference of Children’s Wish to similar charities is that each wish big or small is customised to the

wish of the child in question, and also allows siblings and up to two adults to join the child in the

experience.

Children’s Wishes have been such as trips to Disneyland and meeting their favourite characters

when there which make a big difference to the children and their families.

Scarborough 41 Club and Scarborough Round Table are to hold a joint fundraising evening at

Scarborough Rugby Club on 20 November for Children’s Wish. The evening is to be a Race

Night with a Pie and Pea supper. Cost £ 15.00 per head although the November meeting subs will

cover the cost for 41 Club members and partners.

Members are encouraged to bring wives/partners and guests. Simon Lockley is the main promoter

and would appreciate numbers to the Treasurer by 14 November.

20 November 2015 club meeting: Charity Race Night

horse_racingDear Fellow Members,

Simon Lockley and his group have been working extremely hard organising the Race Night on Friday, 20 November. I do urge you all to support him. This is a serious fund-raising opportunity for the Club and deserves a positive response from us all.

We had a good address earlier this month from Tabler Alan Collins, the ambassador for Round Table Children’s Wish,  who made a considerable round trip to be with us that night to tell us all about Children’s Wish and the great work it is doing in supporting special wishes for seriously ill children.  Alan is returning on 20 November, to support our Race Night. Please support, with your friends, families and colleagues,  to make this event a success.

We will congregate at the Rugby Club from 7pm, with the first race planned for 7.30pm. After four races, there will be food (pie, peas and chips, plus a pudding) and a short charity auction.

This is our November club meeting, but will be on an opt-in basis, so apologies are not required. Do let us make this a successful evening, please!!!

Please confirm your attendance, with the names of your guests, to Steve Slade by noon on Saturday, 14 November. Tickets are £15pp to include your food and can be bought from Simon Lockley in advance or by payment to the Treasurer on the night. Please note that Club members and their partners do not have to pay the Treasurer as the cost will come from your standing order.

Best wishes,

Richard

Can you help Marie Curie to fundraise?

A message from Marie Curie via Round Table:

marie_curie_appeal

As you may already know Marie Curie Nursing in the local area relies heavily on local fundraising and as part of our biggest fundraising appeal – The Great Daffodil Appeal I am in need of some support and wondered whether the round table might take on some dates or help out in providing some volunteers to collect. We will be able to provide all volunteers with tabards, hats, tins and trays of daffodil pin badges to hand out. The link to all the dates in Scarborough is here www.mariecurie.org.uk/get-involved/daffodil-appeal and I have also listed those I need the most help with below…. Any questions please give me a ring or ask anyone interested to get in touch.

  • Tesco – 27th February
  • Sainsburys – 27th and 28th February
  • Morrisons – 27th and 28th February
  • Boyes – 27th, 28th Feb and 1st March
  • Street Collection – 7th March
  • Poundworld – 14th and 15th March
  • Dean’s Garden Centre – 3rd and 4th April

As mentioned I have been working for Marie Curie for over 4 years now but am new to the Scarborough area so I am keen to find out more and meet everyone locally, I would be delighted to come and speak to the round table about the work of our local Marie Curie Nurses and also to speak to you about my plans and if you’ll allow me to pick your brains on the local area that would be a huge help.

Our Marie Curie Nurses in Scarborough provide a high quality and free nursing service to allow people with a terminal illness the choice to die at home. Our nurses work in the evening and every night our nurses are in homes from 10pm in the Scarborough area ensuring their patients are comfortable and where they want to be in the last few days or weeks of their life.

Thank you for considering this request and I look forward to meeting everybody some time soon.

If you can help, please contact Alex Jowett who is co-ordinating the support with Table.
